Chapter 11 – Types of Unbelief
Unbelief was not a naturally occurring way of being for Adam and Eve. Lucifer introduced an identity lie that produced unbelief, and so it still goes today. Once the split was made between God and Man by Adam and Eve all humans were heirs of unbelief, and the enemy has continued to cultivate unbelief in every generation.
There’s unbelief that is rooted in simple ignorance. It’s the simplest form of unbelief to combat because it’s remedied with knowledge of Truth. If a new Believer simply doesn’t know the authority Jesus gave them, but then learns their authority the ignorance is wiped away and that Believer proceeds in absolute Truth of their identity of authority in Jesus.
Then there’s unbelief that comes from wrong teaching. The remedy is to replace what’s wrong with what’s right according to God’s word. This correction sounds simple, but challenging if or when a Christian does not want to change the beliefs they’ve valued for many years. This is why placing our identity in a doctrine rather than in Jesus is dangerous. Christians have come to value doctrine as their identity, rather than their redeemer. We must be so careful to allow continual revelation to transform us so that we are never stuck on one doctrine. We must always be soft to the Holy Spirit growing us! Every revelation we have from the Lord is a layer of knowing Him. It’s not a platform to be camped on, but foundation to build on.
Colossians 2:19 “Holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.”
Then there’s unbelief that comes from simply living in this natural realm. From seeing gravity at work day in and day out. From witnessing the death of a living being be permanent over and over and over again. From the time we’re conceived our nervous systems are taking in information and forming neuro pathways in the brain. We see sickness. We see tragic disasters from weather and earthquakes and fires and our brains associate those forces with inevitable destruction. We learn fear. Most Christians are not raised in homes with parents standing in their authority, so even Christian homes experience the impact of sickness and tragedy as the rest of the world. When the supernatural healing and miraculous protection of our covenants and promises through Jesus are introduced the natural brain struggles to believe it because of natural realm experiences. Add to that the natural realm experiences of seeing unanswered prayers and Christians struggling with sickness and tragedy and the result is a natural brain rooted in fear. There are many Christians who dared to experiment with beginning to believe God’s promises for them, but haven’t seen results immediately in the natural realm and so wrote off faith. It makes sense in human understanding how unbelief become normal.
My reminder to myself and all of us is this: there has been a lifetime of natural realm conditioning. Now, we allow the Holy Spirit to miraculously remaster our understanding to the reality of kingdom dwellers who are unified with God in Christ. THIS is why Christians MUST renew their minds continuously to the Word of God in order to reprogram all the natural realm programming to supernatural programming! When a Christian truly believes in their heart they start to see the supernatural results that Jesus promised. It doesn’t have to take a long time! Supernatural mind renewal, supernatural body healing, and supernatural trauma healing are all the same thing; all three healings occurred instantly in the spirit when we were born again, and the manifestation comes to our earthly reality as we train our focus on the realities of our identity in Christ.
The last type of unbelief is wounding. Hurt, disappointment, trauma, abuse, all of the harm our souls are subjected to in this world. Wounds that go unhealed by God result in unbelief every single time. The same way a heart that believes God is fertile soil for the Word of God, a heart that is wounded is fertile soil for lies of Satan.
Hebrews 12:1 TPT “So we must let go of every wound that has pierced us and the sin we so easily fall into. Then we will be able to run life’s marathon race with passion and determination, for the path has been already marked out before us.”
I invite you to look at your own life and see where these types of unbelief may be at work. Any place the results of the covenants and promises are not producing fruit is a place where unbelief is stuck. Ignorance? Wrong teaching? Wounds that became part of identity that now prevents fully believing what God has said? It takes a little courage to explore the heart for unbelief, but with God it’s a sweet and rewarding process because He’s such a good Dad. He will never expose a wound in order to leave it vulnerable, but to heal it with His love.
To summarize, there is unbelief rooted in ignorance of Truth, unbelief rooted in wrong understanding of God and His Word, natural realm unbelief, and unbelief from wounds. Friends, no one is immune to the influence, the attacks, and the constant barrage of the world that leave us with unbelief, but as with everything else, it’s our choice to focus on the antidote of His love!
Hebrews 3:12 ESV “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.”
