Chapter 9 – Know Your Covenant
I must emphasize that the topic of God’s covenants is so much bigger than one chapter. It is foundationally important because it is all about who we are now in this space of time. Please have grace with me as I try to concisely share about such a huge topic. Please see the appendix for resources from the people who taught me about covenant.
A covenant is an unbreakable contract between two parties. God has made many covenants over time. In this chapter we are focusing on the covenant at the beginning with Adam, the covenant with Abraham, and the new covenant made with Jesus.
A testament is a contract, or covenant. As in “last will and testament.” The gravity and culture of covenant is a not part of western society. We are accustomed to contracts being broken, changed, worked around, and loop-holed. A covenant is an unbreakable, inescapable, and unchangeable contract between two parties. The Bible is segmented into the Old and New Testaments, so you could say, the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. A covenant from God never ends and must be perfectly fulfilled in order to be considered complete. The covenants with Adam, Abraham, and with the Israelites are all nested into the New Covenant that Jesus made with God for humans.
The New Covenant is the one we currently live under that was enacted through Jesus for all humanity that offers righteousness to our spirits through belief in Him.
