Chapter 8 – Identity of Unity with Jesus
Adam and Eve’s disobedience to God impacted the spiritual and physical realms equally. Their disobedience created spiritual division between humans and God because of the sinful spirit that was now in them, which cut humanity off from the heavenly realm and trapped them in the physical realm that was now corrupted. From that point on God’s entire game plan was to reunite humans with Himself in the spirit realm. Which is why Jesus made a way for humans to become righteous spirits in order to be unified with God. When you were born again you were reunited with God! If that reunification is minimized or forgotten, we forget who we really are.
Galatians 2:20 ESV “I have been crucified with Christ it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me, and the life I now live in the flesh I live through faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
But now, because of the redemption of Jesus, humans can choose to believe salvation and be born again, perfectly clean in order to be united with God through Jesus! There’s a beautiful physical symbol of what happened spiritually. The Holy of Holies was the innermost sanctuary of the Temple where the Spirit of God was present on earth. It was separated from the rest of the temple by a heavy, thick curtain from ceiling to floor, wall to wall. Under the Law the High Priest would enter once a year only after extensive cleansing to make himself clean enough to be in God’s presence and not die. In fact, they tied a rope to his heel so that if he wasn’t properly cleansed and he died, they could drag him out without further casualties. But, at the moment that Jesus died that thick curtain that enclosed the Holy of Holies was torn from top to bottom, proving that humanity now had free access to God because of the sacrifice of Jesus! (Matthew 27:51, Mark 15:38, Luke 23:45, Hebrews 10:19-22) Remember that NO ONE in that temple was born again yet, but none of them were killed by exposure to the Holy of Holies. That’s because Jesus made atonement for ALL sin for ALL people for ALL time. Does that mean that everyone is automatically born again? NO. Jesus’ sacrifice covered all the sin of all humans for all time, but each human being must then choose to believe Jesus and what he’s done in order to be born again.
