Chapter 19 – Heart Revelation
There is a difference between believing with the intellect and believing with the heart. Agreeing with a doctrine and believing from the heart produces very different results in our thoughts and words and therefore in our actions, decisions, and ultimately lives. Let’s talk this out.
Let’s start with these scriptures about the heart to see the whole picture:
Romans 10:9-10 ESV “because if you confess with your moth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
Hebrews 4:12 ESV “For the word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Mark 11:23 ESV “Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.”
Luke 6:45 ESV “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
Ephesians 1:18 ESV “having the eyes of your heart enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might.”
A few observations:
Our hearts and our words have a deep, powerful, and important connection.
Heart, spirit, and soul are separate but overlapping parts of our being.
The heart is the seat of belief; the mouth is the microphone of the heart.
The heart is what God is primarily concerned with.
Faith and hope both come from the heart and not the mind.
