Chapter 15 – Cultivating Intimacy with God
At the heart of believing God is the necessity that we trust Him. To trust someone requires the cultivation of intimacy. There’s an expectation in church that we should just trust God because He is God, which isn’t wrong, but does not meet people where they’re at in the human soul experience we’ve been discussing. In cultivating trust with God, the attitude ought not to be that He is proving His trustworthiness to us, but that we are proving His trustworthiness to ourselves by getting to know who God is as an unchanging, loving source of good.
Intimacy cannot be facilitated by a third party. It is only you and God. If you had a relationship with a person who you rarely saw, but you spent a lot of time with their family talking about how good that person is, all their attributes, and everyone’s experiences with that person you would be encouraged in your relationship, but there would be no intimacy with the person. It’s the same with God. We can go to church and bible studies and talk about how great He is, but if we’re not spending time with Him talking about the challenges, the wins, and the dreams then we’re building relationship with a concept rather than a being.
